Sam Heffner
Sam Heffner is an artist currently based in Richmond, Virginia. They earned their BFA in Sculpture + extended media from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2020. They’re also really into hot glass.
With considered thought, Sam Heffner works through painting, found objects, text taking the form of object or poetry, and photography, leaving space for material to change in supporting concept. Heffner's work is reliant on their own sensory experiences, specifically intersections of sight, smell, and touch, where they finds opposing slippage and sharpness that creates confusion/dilution within personal memory. This “confusion/dilution” most often takes some form of nostalgia or sediment. Domestic and familial connections, particularly of maternal heritage and religion, are among the fundamentals in their thinking, which often nod to autobiography and storytelling. Most of Heffner's work is driven simply by emotion and gravity, and a certain indulgence in their own obsessions.
